Sometimes in pastoral visits I have simply given people a brief verse or passage, with some suggestions on how to meditate on it, and asked them if they would be willing to do so? If they are, I ask if the next time we visit or talk on the phone if they would be willing to share with me some benefits they received from that passage and offer to share some blessings that I have received from doing the same.
One such passage is:
My soul, wait silently for God alone. For my expectation is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
Psalm 62:5-8
